That's What I Remember

As the curtains open I fly in from the wings, Applauds applauds and many thanks are do, The house lights dim and then the plays the thing, You have my word most of it is true... Mama taught me to make believe That's what I remember, Always be sure you've got an ace up you sleeve, That's what I remember, when I remember, That's what I remember... Picture me swooping on a swing, head thrown back, feet up in the sky, Five years old or just a little more, Kicking at a cloud, hair flying up behind... Daddy tricked me into driving alone That's what I remember, Holding me up until he let me go, That's what I remember, when I remember, That's what I remember... Reading On the Road at a very tender age, I was just thirteen and how I loved to break the rules, Smoking cigarettes and hitching with my thumb, and hanging with the bad boys after school... Couldn't walk so I learned how to roll, That's what I remember, Thought I was smart, tried to be droll, That's what I remember, when I remember, That's what I remember... Can't you hear the sizzle of a brain cell frying, All grown up, a pocket full of pills, California days just breeze on by, Playing my guitar, cavorting in the hills... Solitary mostly alone, That's what I remember, Legs up in the air and head deep in the zone, That's what I remember, when I remember, That's what I remember... Took a stab at Hollywood Town, Got screwed up and I got turned down, Then I wrote a hit sing, not what I'd planned, so I ran away and joined a rock and roll band... Fell in love with the lead guitar, which might have been expected, wrote some nice music but did not get far What I got was rejected, which might have been expected, and that's what I remember... Ran to the desert when things got rough, Lots of sand and prickly cactus too, Lasted a year and that was quite enough, 'cause there was too much heat and too much nothing to do... Went home to resume my life, That's what I remember, Got a great job being somebody's wife, That's what I remember, when I remember, That's what I remember... Slowed right down to watch my children grow, The drama end and the living begins, Sit on the porch and watch the night sky glow, As the inevitable stage lightsdim... Maybe life's just a big balloon, rrrruuuttt tat tut ta tut tah, All I know for sure is that it ends too soon, rrrruuuttt tat tut ta tut tah, tat tut ta tut tah, And...that's what I remember That's what I remember, That's what I remember, That's what I remember, That's what I remember... What I got was rejected
